San Francisco Bay Oakland International Airport project approved for federal funding

Federal Aviation Administration’s grant allotted for OAK’s taxiway modernization

Oakland, Calif. – August 5, 2024: The San Francisco Bay Oakland International Airport (OAK) will receive a $14.6 million grant for the rehabilitation of one of the airport’s critical taxiways. The grant is part of a federal program administered by the Biden-Harris administration to improve airport facilities around the country.

The grant was awarded by the U.S. Department of Transportation Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). A total of $374 million is being approved for 299 airports in 46 states, and American Samoa.

“We are grateful to the Biden-Harris administration for this essential funding and to Congresswoman Barbara Lee for her leadership and steadfast support of our airport,” said Port of Oakland Director of Aviation Craig Simon. “It is crucial that we not only maintain but improve our airport infrastructure to ensure that it’s safe, resilient, and efficient.”

Congresswoman Barbara Lee led a delegation of congressional representatives in support for the funds coming to OAK. The Port thanked Congresswoman Lee for her leadership and support, and delegation members Rep. John Garamendi, Rep. Eric Swalwell, and Rep. Mark DeSaulnier who joined in advocacy for the funds.

“It is vital to the East Bay region that we continue our commitment to modernize critical aviation infrastructure,” said Oakland Congresswoman Barbara Lee. “I am very pleased to see this federal funding coming to OAK that will deliver benefits to the region through construction jobs and improved infrastructure. I am thankful for the Administration for their ongoing support.”

The Port of Oakland owns and operates OAK and is committed to on-going infrastructure improvements while at the same time focusing on its goal of reaching zero-emissions operations.
